Toxic chemicals in our clothing not only poison our soil and waterways, they can be absorbed through our skin. During my battle with health issues, I had skin rashes that couldn’t be explained. It sent me on another search to find answers. What I found was that toxins can hide all around us in places we wouldn’t even consider. The health and environmental impacts of just the growing process of cotton is typically minimally considered. The ground and surrounding environment becomes poisoned, not to mention the health impacts to the farmers that work at the cotton farms. Then the dying process of the finished cotton fabric is not only toxic to the workers lungs and skin, but can leach chemicals into our skin causing rashes. In addition, the waterways around factories are commonly poisoned with dyes leaching from the factory after the dying process. When I saw the pictures of the poisoned waterways turned a myriad of colors, I decided I need to make more conscious decisions about what I purchased. These companies below are conscious about quality organic fabrics and sustainability when producing a finished clothing product.
Amour Vert – www.amourvert.com
This is one of my absolute favorite clothing brands. All of their fabrics are grown sustainably and the clothing is dyed using vegetable based dyes. In addition, their clothing is made California based factories and they support fair wages. The main fabric they use is Modal and it is so incredible soft and flows well. They carry everything from organic denim to dresses and amazing tops and blouses. They even carry workwear which can be difficult to find in the sustainable industry.
Brook There – www.brookthere.com
I searched for organic cotton under garments for years. I am picky about the fit, but I found this small company out of Maine produces a great product. The fabric is very soft and I love the simplicity of the items.
Modern Burlap – modernburlap.com
Now for baby items. I have purchased a few items from this shop and they have been so cute! They have every thing from clothing to scripture swaddle blankets and even a few items for mommas! They have expanded to include door mats, kitchen items, and scripture blankets. This business began as a dream for one mama of 3, and she has been able to create amazing products I haven’t found anywhere else. Definitely one of my favorite shops. I love purchasing the swaddle blankets as gifts!
Kowtow Clothing – www.kowtowclothing.com
This company is by far the best maker of organic cotton sweaters and tees that I have found! I am spoiled with my thick cotton New Zealand made sweaters! I can definitely tell the difference between this product and a non organic item. The softness and thickness of the Kowtow items make this my number 1 pick for organic cotton sweaters and tees. Kowtow creates a made to last product with organically grown cotton from India, made in their New Zealand location.
